Trip of a lifetime - Numbers!

Aloha gang!

So it's been almost 2 days since we been home, and still trying to adjust my body clock and mental clock of being back to work and some form of normalcy...but I cannot return to the 808 and just be normal anymore after what I saw, experienced, lived, laughed and loved...2 things right away sticks out for me and I am still processing this all out:

  1)  My time with Brandi was priceless...14 straight days of hanging out with her, laughing, eating, seeing, experiencing...just living life with her...it was a time that will never be forgotten and  I pray that God used us in this time to see what He wanted us to see, hear what He wanted us to hear, love what He wants us to love and live differently cause of it all..of what He did and went through.

  2)  Our Israel Ohana...boy do I miss the interaction we had with the 6 couples...the 3 Tom's and their wives, Amy, Marilyn and Raymonde...Steve and Loretta, and Ann and Jim (our Tar Heel ohana)...we sure had a blast and will never forget them.

Here are some numbers that you all will appreciate, to kind of see how big of a deal and scope of what we did over the last 2 weeks:

Over 14 days from Sunday April 10 to April 24, that 336 hours we were away from home.

We flew 21,234 miles - Hawaii to NY to Tel Aviv back to NY back to Hawaii

We were in the air for 40.50 hours, with wait time at airport of about 11 hours.

We spent a total of 4 days in NYC (1.5 before Israel and 2 days after Israel)

We spent a total of 8 days in Israel

We spent almost 2 full days of air travel time.

We drove approximately 677 while in Israel in our luxury bus

We walked approximately 42 miles while in Israel (based on my phone's step o meter)

While in NY over the 2 visits, we walked 39 miles, 1 day we did 14 miles

In 2 weeks, we walked approximately 81 miles.  In Jesus day, they did that in 5 days or so..15 miles a day...lol

We caught 2 subway trains in NYC

We caught 6 cabs/Uber while in NYC - nuts drivers

On my phone alone, I have 1381 photos & 85 views

I posted 12 blogs with 1462 views as of this morning, with 31 followers

I did 4 loads of laundry for my clothes only..lol

In all of this there is still 1 God, the Triune God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Same today, yesterday and tomorrow.

Priceless and so amazing what we did and where we went.

I am still trying to process how to put this all together in one source of memory for me...it will take some time, but it will be done.

Love you all and thank you all for the love, support, prayers and comments through it all.  My life has forever been increased because of what I/we experienced.

Aloha and God bless!!!

Hawaii to NYC to Israel to NYC - final post - ALOHA means goodbye

Sunday April 24

We heading home today to the 808..looking forward to it..my own bed, our ohana, local food and some sort of normalcy…this was the longest I have been on a vacation/trip..2 weeks and every moment was so memorable and precious. The time with Brandi was priceless even though I think 2 weeks straight together 24/7 will drive most people nuts..lol.  It wa a huge blessing to see so many things and experience so much of God’s place, plan and HIS-story.  It’s about 5:30am and we are leaving our hotel at 7am.  Our 9 hour flight leaves at 10am and we are back in Hawaii, hopefully by 3pm.  First stop – food..nah..taking Brandi home then getting my car and going home to wash clothes and pass out.  Brandi and I back to work at 6am tomorrow.  It will be a long week, but well worth it. Thank you Lord for it all!!!

Yesterday was awesome!  We slept in till like 7:30am…got our Americanized breakfast from downstairs...mmmmm good.  Chilled in the room till about 11am. Headed to the Subway station 42nd and Bryant to catch the D-train to 161 St and Bronk.  It was packed with Yankee fans heading to the game, so we would not get lost.  It was about a 30min ride, about 6 stops, heading North from Manhattan up to the Bronx, all underground.  It was pretty cool.  The station was crowded when we got off the subway, packed with people in their Yankee gear and excitement for a team that is 6 wins and 9 losses but won the night before.  Coming out of the below ground terminal and up the stairs, was pretty surreal.  The Bronx…wow…and Yankee Stadium…unreal.  I had just bought the tickets this morning in Section 232, the second level and made sure we were under the covers, in case it rained but also to avoid any more sun..we had lots of sun in Israel..lol.  Walking around the stadium to gate 2 was pretty cool.  Got our tickets and we headed in and got our Babe Ruth bobblehead doll, the first 18000 fans got it.  We were in the stadium by noon, and it was already bustling. The view from behind home plate to our side of seats on the left field foul ball pole was great.  Brandi got us 2 hot dogs, one sweet one spicy and fries and drinks.  Pretty good food.  We also got a huge tub of popcorn (but could not eat it all) and some cracker jacks.  Brandi was complaining that in the cracker jack packages, they no longer give out prizes..you have to go online to win something.  Lol.  Everything was pricey, but you expect that at game…but everything was well portioned.  They had this tub, 4 sliders (either chicken or hamburger) with choke fries in a collectible bucket for $20.  They had Philly Cheese steak sandwiches, beers of all kine, nachos in a baseball helmet, dip and dots, and all the typical stuff.  The game was good, close.  The pitcher from Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Brad Snell, was making his major league debut in Yankee Stadium and he did pretty well.  Masahiro Tanaka, the Japanese star was pitching for the Yankees today. It was a great game in a great environment….however, we missed the ending…a walk off homer run to win the game for the Yankees in the 9th inning with 2 outs…why you may ask?  I did not want to get stuck with 30000+ fans all leaving at the same time…yeah yeah I know…bad sports fan.  Lol.  We left after the 7th inning stretch and walked around to the outfield and was so awesome.  Caught a cab back to Central Park driving down the Harlem side of Manhattan.  It was pretty cool seeing the whole of Manhattan throughout this trip

I had hoped to take the rest of Lori’s ashes (I spread some out on our last day in Israel at our hotel on Mount Zion) and either put it in Central Park or Rockefeller Center.  We headed to Rockefeller Center as Central Park looked packed, all kinds of tourist, a bunch of weddings and just packed.  So we headed to Rockefeller Center on Amercias Road and when we got to the area of the place that we saw the tulips on Saturday (the day before), they had all been replaced.  We figured it was not God’s timing so we just headed back to room.  Got back around 5pmish, packed up and rested for a bit and wanted to go watch the UFC fights at a sports bar and eat a steak.  Headed out around 7pmish and found the New York Beer Company…boy was it cold tonight…the wind was blowing so it was cold.  The Beer Company was a cool restaurant and bar.  The food was great, the only problem..was once again my body clock timing…the UFC fight’s main event was at 10PM EST/7PM PST…lol..we were 2 hours early.  So we ate and headed back to room to rest up and get ready for our trip home.

Was a bit restless sleeping, and kept getting up every few hours.  But am now ready to go home.  We will head down in a bit with our bags all packed.  Got about a 45min ride to airport and we will be heading home.

Thank You Lord for all that You have shown and provided and spoken in these last 2 weeks.  The people, the sights, the HIS-story, Your story.  We have been blessed beyond our imagination.  I will never be able to explain the things in full of what I saw, heard and felt on this trip, but in the next few weeks, will attempt to give God the Glory in some form of media communication. Lord, have Your way in me.

God bless you all and love you all..so looking forward to being home!!

NYC - Friday April 22 Adventures- 1 Kanak and 1 beauty in Da Big Apple

Saturday, April 23, 2016

What a great day yesterday was in New YorkTimes Square  We made the most of the day, considering that Brandi and I both were up by 5am.  Bodies time clock all of…lol!

Got my workout in and had my first taste of pork (bacon and sausage) in over 9 days..hmmm good…lol.  Even though Friday was Passover, sorry, needed to eat some bacon. It is so amazing how unhealthy our American Diet is…in Israel, we had all kines of fruits and veggies along with nothing fried for breakfast other than the vegetable omelet’s.  Brandi and I talked about making some Mediterranean style food moving forward.  I think I actually lost weight cause of all the walking, one of my shorts fits so easily now and my belt buckle is all the way to the end..lol.

Anyway, got my workout in early, ate breakfast with Brandi in the lobby (included in room charge) and headed to Time Square,  Our hotel is located on W. 40 Street, and Times Square is on 45th Street, like a 5 min walk..we are right in the thick of it.  So blessed and so cool.  We hung out where they drop the ball for New Years and was there early, like 8am and according to Brandi it was empty.  It was so cool to see the billboards and buildings and all the places you hear about and see on TV.  Our first stop was to Rockefeller Center, but before we got there we saw the Good Morning America filming going on and their recording studios.  It was pretty cool seeing all the people trying to get on TV and the excitement abound.  As we walked around, we noticed some beautiful tulips in a planter box near the Good Morning America studio..it just reminded us of Lori coming along with us on this trip.

Got to see Radio Music City Hall next to the Rockefeller Center.  We headed to the Top of Rock Observatory Center.  It is 70 stories high, approximately 850 feet…we got there and it was not as crowded as it would be later on in the day. We got our tickets and took our pic on 1 of the 2 picture places..the first is a copy of where the famous pic of guys sitting on the construction beams, way up high during the construction of this huge building.  We then caught the elevator to the 67th floor, a 40 second elevator ride..Lori would not have been happy with that ride.  Even had a light show in the elevator on the ceiling. We got through all the purchases, check in and elevator ride in less than 15 mins.  Amazing considering that thousands visited it daily.  As you enter the area, there are these posters that tell you what you will see, the one that stood out to me was the one that said we would be able to see 8.5 million people at one time…I was like wow.  The views were spectacular when we got to the 67th floor, then you can go up 3 more floors, 69th and 70th..so beautiful.  So majestic, so God gorgeous.  Could see all of Central Park, about 10 blocks north.  Then to the south could see the Empire State building and Chrysler Tower, like 2-5 blocks away.  You could also see much of Brooklyn and Long Island to West and you could see World Trade Center and the Statue of Liberty and New Jersey to the southeast.  It was gorgeous, God gorgeous.  Unreal.  It was not even crowded..maybe less than a 100 people on any floor.  We then got a 2nd pic taken with both north and south views.  However, when we went to get the pics, the photo lady did not have the SD card in her camera and we were already down on the main deck.  It’s ok, they gave us the 5 pics from the construction beam for free, well sort of free, 2 we paid for, the other 3 was free.  We grabbed a small snack downstairs and headed to Central Park.  One thing that we were unable to do was to go and see the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, we had tried to get tickets, but were unable to..that’s ok. All else was great.  When we stepped outside the Rockfeller Center, there was tulips everywhere on the courtyard..it was really beautiful.

We then headed to Central Park, and like in Israel, pan handlers are everywhere…same aggressiveness, just different items…on the streets, guys trying to sell bus rides, tickets, horse carriage and bike carriage rides (I think it was like $2.50 per minute for horse rides), all kinds of other stuff.  Central Park from top to bottom, 2.5 miles..if you were to walk around the edges, it is 6 miles.  It is really awesome.  We spent about 1.5 hours in the park: walking, talking, taking a look at all the beauty and skycape of the city line and tree lines.  It was so God gorgeous.  We made it about 1/3 through the park, maybe almost half, and sat down in a courtyard area called the Mall area…had a group of 4 guys singing some eclectic comedy music…pretty cool.  Had a bunch of bike ride tours going on…the bike riders can ride on the street and designated areas in the park, but they had to walk their bikes through here.  Behind the band had tulips once again..beautiful purple and white tulips and butterflies.  Lori was being represented everywhere.  We walked and sat at a few more spots, just taking the New York way of life in…it was a sunny day, lots of people in the park and all the hustle and bustle of big city life.

It was almost noon and we were a bit hungry.  We were recommended 2 places, Carnegie Deli with their pastrami sandwich and the other was Ellen’s Stardust Diner.  Our new found friends, Tom and Amy Webster told us about this great place, great NY style food and the servers all sing.  Each person working at this place are aspiring theater wanna be actors and actresses.  They can all sing and sing well.  From Phantom of the Opera, to Bruno Mars…it was amazing.  The food was ono and the entertainment was even better.  We were 2 for 2 on our choices this morning and it was such a blessings.  Carnegie’s was packed so this choice was a good one for Brandi and I.  It was now about 1:30pmish and we were just going to go hang in Time Square till we could buy theater tickets.

The TKTS service at the Times Square, sells most of the major operas, theater and plays on Broadway and off Broadway at a discounted price.  Thousands of people wait everyday to take advantage of these discounted tickets.  It was early and I was in no rush to shop so I decided to wait in line…while Brandi went to go shopping.  I was #4 in line..woohoo..thank you Jesus!!!  People watched, checked FB and talked with people around me.  Brandi went back to the room about 2:30pm and I got our tickets for Fiddler on the Roof..it was chaos though buying these tickets.  Hundreds of people waiting in this one line, but then there also is another line that if you bought a ticket within a 7 day window period, you could stand in a preferred line next to our line with hundreds, if not 1000’s waiting.  They let this line go first..so I actually was not number 4, I was more like 74..lol..but I got our 2 tickets in about 15 minutes, and paid discounted prices @ 50%...but here is the kicker…we got 2nd row from stage dead center…I normally don’t like sitting up close, but when we saw the seats later on..it was such a blessing.  I met Brandi back at the room and took a nap for like 2 hours.

Prior to going to the show, we decided to go take advantage of being guests in the hotel that managed the Sky Room lounge, a hip bar on the 30th floor of our building that had happy hour and a view of Manhattan looking northward.  The view was nothing compared to Rockefeller Center, but it was a nice lounge  The pupu’s were pretty good and we killed about an hour of time.  We headed back up to Time Square area to the famous Broadway Theater.  Fiddler on the Roof just came back into playing and it definitely tied into our Israel themed trip…We walked about 12 blocks to this famous theater and got seated within 10 mins.  The seats of the theater are not big boy comfortable but the view from the 2nd row dead center was unreal.  I mean spectacular  I am not one for plays…when you give me a dark room, with a/c and a somewhat comfortable chair, I will be passed out within 10 minutes.  Lori can verify that the 2 plays she took me to Phantom of the Opera and Cats, I did not make it out of the 1st hour..only Lion King did I stay up the whole time..Hakuna Matata…lol.  But this play based on a Jewish man and his family with 5 daughters..was so awesome. I have heard about it and apparently it was supposed to be read in high school, but I never have…but it was so awesome and tied into Passover, Jewish customs and “Tradition”…the main song and theme of the play…”Tradition”…its what caused the Bible time Jews to not believe that Jesus was not the Messiah, but just a prophet and to this very day, they still struggle with that.  What a great show to watch with so much culture that we just witnessed a few days earlier.  2.5 hours of great entertainment.   Thank You Lord for this blessing.

So we went 3 for 3 on the things that we wanted to do so far in NY.  We got back to the room at almost midnight and I was beat…ended up walking 14 miles today per my step o meter thing…about 1.5 miles of it was during my early morning workout, the rest was just from our adventures today.  I passed out in no time….didn’t wake up till 7:30am…that’s the most I slept at one time on this trip.  Thank You Lord.

Well, today is our last day and we are going to go watch a Yankee game.  Looking forward to that.  Friday was a blessed day and a fulfillment to what I believe Lori had wanted us to do.  So blessed by everything.  Looking forward to today and then heading home tomorrow (Sunday).

Thank  You Lord for everything!  The rest, the shows, the walking, the tulips, the food…everything.  Lord, thank You so much.  To You be the glory!!!

Love you all and God bless you all!!  Looking forward to seeing you all in a few days!!

Pictures having issues on Google Photo from Friday..will post what I can and will do a story movie when I get back of these last few days!!

New York New York - Aloha from the Big Apple

Friday, April 22

As the sun rises in Israel, our time is setting here is this great land.
Pray for Peace on Jerusalem

Well, its 4:30am EST in New York, and my body clock is all messed up.  We got in at about 4:30pm yesterday into Newark, our flight landed about an hour early.  Thank You Lord for the traveling mercies, the 4 movies I watched, the extra leg room and the 2 nice older ladies who sat next to me.  Lol.  Was weird, they served us a lasagna meal with Mediterranean salad about 1.5 hours into the flight.  Then about 2 hours out from landing, they served us a egg dish with salsa, yogurt and a mini bagel..based on Israel time, it would have been about 9:30pm night time or about 2:30pm NY time…unusual food timing…but oh well…at least we had food.  10.5 hours in a plan sure is long a long time to be flying  Still amazed that we, just spent the last 8 days in Israel

Still processing out all the amazing things I saw, witnessed, heard and felt in the land that Jesus walked, lived and loved 2000+ years ago.  Totally blessed by all the people we met…the 3 Tom’s and their wives:  Tall Tom and wonderful Amy, Texas Tom and French born Ramone, Baptist Tom and sweet Marilyn.  Steven and Loretta who we got to hang out with and eat lunch on our free day.  Ann and Jim from North Carolina left us a day before to Paris and I was so amazed at how small their bags were..they had 2 bags, when combined smaller than my 1 bag…and they were traveling for like 17 days..they went to Jordan for a few days before meeting us and then went to Paris for a few days after.  And finally, our hosts, David and Monica Stoker.  The Stoker’s are a Punahou/Westmont connection and in the short time that we got to know them since 2009, they have been a huge blessing to my family and will be forever grateful for allowing us to come on this trip and making us feel so welcomed and loved.  This trip was much as about relationships as it was about seeing the HIS-story of the Bible. At NH Aloha Pau’ole our church plant, our mission statement is;

We are committed to loving God and advancing His Kingdom by loving people to a place of freedom.

So in this mission statement, we get the loving God and loving people part – it’s the greatest commandment Jesus gave us.   What we have been learning is the other 2 points of our mission statement over the last 3 years – Advancing His Kingdom and to a place to freedom.  For us, at NH Aloha Pau’ole, Advancing His Kingdom means 3 things and its all about relationships:

                        Making a new relationship
Taking an existing relationship and making it better/stronger
                        Restoring a broken/damaged relationship

You see, Jesus came to reestablish God’s kingdom on earth…to reconnect us to the Father and each other in a healthy way, regardless how messed up we are or have been.  Jesus is and was a relationship.  God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit is a relationship…Love is a relationship.  And as we, me, learn and relearn how to love God and love people, for who they are and how valuable each person is to God I am freeing myself from whatever struggles I am going thru and also helping other people to be free in their God given design.  This trip accomplished 2 of the 3 goals in our church/life mission – making new relationships with our Israel Ohana and making my existing relationship with Brandi and the Stokers better/stronger.  God blessed this time and blessed me with this people.

During Lori’s 2.5 year battle, we lived out this mission statement as a family and God has blessed us with so much people, so much comfort and so much love.  This trip was a capstone and also a milestone in our journey for me, as well as Brandi.  So looking forward to what God has in store for my future with all of His hope, promises and callings.

One amazing blessing that came out of this trip was the very first couple we got to meet and get to know was Tom and Marilyn Griffith (Baptist Tom).  We had just met them at the Newark airport as well as the rest of the group and were waiting in the pre-boarding security line.  As we were talking, Marilyn asked Brandi where her mom was and was she not joining us on this trip. Brandi shared her testimony and Marilyn began to tear up…she shared that her and Tom, were both widowers whose spouses had died at very young ages and remarried later in life and have been married for now 7 years.  They had been through what I had been through and totally understood all the emotions that I have been going through the last year and then as parents of children (Tom’s kids were young, like in early teens and Marilyn’s kid was a teenager) understood the struggles of Brandi, even though as a young adult.  There was so much compassion and understanding and the connection was automatic.  Thank You Lord for the right people and the right time You provided because of this trip.  To You be the glory.

Final story before I close out this blog…we had 3 men named Tom on this trip…and when we arrived at our hotel in Israel on Wednesday night, late…we had dinner and then met as a group to introduce ourselves and share, as Jim and Ann from North Carolina joined us to make the group of 14…we started labeling the Tom’s so we would be able to yell out their names and they not be confused…Tall Tom for obvious reasons, cause he was a good 6’6” tall and stood out in the crowd...his personality and love for us was as big as he was..what a great guy.  Then there was Texas Tom, with the Southern drawl who married a French girl from Canada and could not speak English when they first met..a french speaking girl with a honky tonk Texas dude…Tom reminded me of the favorite uncle that we all have…always talking to you and making you feel valued and wanted and the best nephew or niece…and finally Baptist Tom, the Godsend couple who related to me and my recent loss…he was labeled Baptist Tom cause he went to seminary school and is a Baptist trained minister and just an amazing, intellectual, thoughtful guy.  These 3 Tom’s, along with Jim, Steve and David are all Godly men who blessed me tremendously on this trip. Lori would have loved all of them and their great and lovely wives.  I cannot even begin to be grateful enough to the Lord for this bountiful of blessings.

Well, it’s now almost 5am and Brandi and I are both up..lol..body clocks all off…I’m going to go work out and we going meet for breakfast in our lobby (Fairfield and Courtyards are so awesome) at 6:30am and then begin our day.  Hoping to see a Broadway play this afternoon, see the sights of Time Square and in our hotel, is a attached the highest 360 view Sky Room over NYC Times Square.  Its on the 34th floor of our hotel and we plan to get some pupus tonight.

Lord, thank You for your continued love and joy throughout this trip and through our lives.  Love You so much and bless You!!  To You be the glory!!

Thank you all for your love and support and prayers and being a part of our journey.  God bless you all!!

Israel Wednesday April 20 - last full day in the Holy Land

Wednesday, April 20, 2016

Well, today is our last day of touring as we head back to Tel Aviv tomorrow, to catch our 12:55 flight back to New York.  A couple from our group left us today, Jim and Ann from North Carolina, as they will be heading to Paris for a few days.   This couple were filled with Southern hospitality and we were blessed to meet them.  Praying their trip and a hedge of protection over them as they travel.  Aloha and hope to see you both soon!

Today, we were making 3 stops, our final 3 stops of the tour and probably for me the most significant ones. We first visited the site known as the Upper Room.  It is located on Mount Zion outside of the Zion Gate in Jerusalem.  It is also known as the Cenacle and in this room, many significant New Testament time events occurred.  The Passover Meal (the Last Supper) (Matthew 26), the washing of the disciples feet (Matthew 26), the gathering of the disciples after the Ascension of Jesus and the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples and many others on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2).

Topography and travel distance is important to the history of Jesus.  We read the scripture of the Last Supper and then I was asked to read the Acts 2, the day of Pentecost.  It was so profound to read the actual scripture in the actual room that it occurred in.  It was a reverent awe time for me…

Also at this location is what many believe to be King David’s tomb below the Upper Room.  David was the only patriarch in his lineage that was buried in Jerusalem.  Most of the others were buried in the family grave of Hedron.  This was significant, because until Jesus came along, King David was the most revered leader throughout history, as he was the one God loved the most back in the day.  Like all the other places to see with my own eyes, was totaling amazing.

When leaving this location, we walked down the hill to what is known as Caiaphas House, which is now memorialized by the Church of St. Peter in Gallicantu.  A church overseen by the Roman Catholic Church.  This is where a few things in the ending of Jesus life occurred.  After the last supper when Jesus was betrayed by Judas, Jesus was taken to Caiaphas,  the High Priest house, who was Jesus main opponent and in Luke 22, it tells of the events that was occurring to Jesus and Peter.  Caiaphas judged Jesus to be killed, but did not have the authority to make this happen.  Thus Jesus was kept as a prisoner in the bottom of cistern for overnight and was to be delivered to Caesar the next day, to begin what is known now as the Via Dolorosa.  We shared the scripture from Psalm 88 regarding the pain and suffering that the psalmist talked about happening to him, but instead prophesying what would occur to Jesus at the very bottom of this cistern, a good 100 feet from the street level.  It was a pit..not a good pit to be left in.  And again, to see this area, this landmark where Jesus life was occurring was amazing.  Prior to walking down to this location, Hill-El made us stop at the top of the hill and in one great moment in time, he walked us through and replayed for us the events that occurred leading up to the week of Jesus being crucified.

Coming over the Mount of Olives from Bethany and Bethage, to the Mount of Olives and entering Jerusalem on Palm Sunday via the road.  To the Southwest corner of the temple where He would enter the Temple Mount on Mount Morian.  To where He would teach in the temple and knock over the money changers table.  To the Passover, then taken back to Gethsemane across the valley again, where He was betrayed by Judas.  Taken back across the valley the to house of Caiaphas and then transferred to Caesar at the Praetorian which led to the Via Dolorosa – the way of the Cross actually occurring.  Amazing, amazing!!!

Here is also where the Rooster crowed 3 times after Peter denied He knew Jesus as Caiaphas was with Him.

All I can say is wow!

The last place we visited was the Garden Tomb  For the past few years, since the early 1900’s there has been a discrepancy in regards to where Jesus was actually crucifed and buried.  Was it at Calvary or at Skull of Golgotha?  Both have archeological evidence as well as written proof of to where Jesus was killed, buried and raised.  This debate will continue on forever as in all things with the Bible..however here is what we all need to know:

Whichever cave Jesus was placed in after being killed, He is not there any longer nor 2000+ years ago. As our Garden Tomb guide said, it is not so much where He died and was buried and rose again..but the fact that we know in faith and proof that it occurred and we are all saved by what He did and we have eternal life with the Father…amen!!!

There is way more data and info I could provide for today, but I am beat.  Just know for me, it has been a life changing, life altering, God glorying experience that I have been blessed with.  Lori’s passing, provided many miracles, blessings, healing and joy in many things and this was one huge one.

We all had the afternoon free.  4 of us headed back to hotel..we first stopped at the train station by our hotel that has no trains and ate a great American lunch..burgers, fries and an Jewish beer.  Then we walked back. I went to the Turkish Sauna room, the pool and got a massage from a guy named Gabriel, who was barely 5’1” tall, but massaged my busted up body to a point of no return…it was a blast.

We had our last meal together and shared one thing we were all blessed with and the sharing was priceless.  For me it was the relationships we built over this past week.. there were too many places and things I saw to name them all, but it was the relationships that will make this trip even more of a blessing.

I will close out this blog once in New York and am so thankful for you all and for all your prayers and support.  Please continue to pray for peace in this region and that God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit be recognized as the True Triune God and that people be unified in Him throughout the world.

Lord, all I can say is thank You!  Love you!!

Love you all, God bless you all and hope to see you all soon!!!

Blessings

Israel - Tuesday April 18 MASADA not Malasada

Tuesday, April 19

Well, its our 2nd to last day of touring Israel and today was the day we headed back into the wilderness….heading down to Ein Gedi, Masada and the Dead Sea where we were just on Saturday when we went to Qumran.  The desert!  We also did a short stop at Jericho, will explain why so short later.

Before I get into the update, as of Jerusalem news services today, 21 people were injured, it has been deemed a terrorist attack, but its unclear if it was done against the bus company by a disgruntled employee or against the Israeli government and people.  The type of bomb and materials used are in line with a terrorist bomb.  Also, this Friday, begins the Jewish tradition of Passover, along with the Greek Orthodox celebration of Easter I think…lol.  All we know is that this upcoming week is a very volatile time anticipated by many…we leave Thursday morning prior to all the recognized events.  Please continue to pray for peace in this region..many different factions with different beliefs and different expectations.  Palestine’s are not allowed into Israeli controlled area unless pre-approved due to the religious significance of this upcoming week. Will explain more later this unusual living climate in Israel

Also, I have one correction to make to my post from the Sunday.  I mentioned that Jesus was tempted at the Southwestern wall of the Temple Mount…oops..wrong location…He was tempted at Jericho and we saw the supposed area of this event.  My bad on the misinformation.

So today, we started out a little bit earlier as we were heading down to the desert, down South, about a 60-70 mile drive.  Also, we were told it was going to be hot…real hot. At some point today while at the Dead Sea, it was 100 degrees +…but unlike Hawaii where humidity is what gets  you, here in the wilderness, its like oven heat.  Thank God we had some winds at Masada

Our first stop was at the Ein Gedi, where David fled to when King Saul was chasing him. 1st Samuel 24, the story is told of David hiding in the caves and King Saul going into one of these caves to relieve himself (use bathroom), and not knowing that David was hiding in there.  The story goes that David’s men wanted to kill King Saul there as it was the most opportune time…yet, David did not do so as he was honoring the relationship of this being his king…and not wanting to do something that was not honorable.  As Saul exited the cave and David followed him out and called out to him and when Saul realized it was David and what he had not done, kill him as he could’ve, King Saul recognized how righteous David was.  Ein Gedi means spring of the wild goats. We saw a bunch of Ibek goats, bountiful in this area  Pretty cool to see another area of where the Bible was lived out 3000+ years ago.

Our next stop was Masada.  What an amazing sight to see.  This fortress built by King Herod was built on a mount that stands almost 1500 feet high (a 150 floor building, Hawaii’s tallest building is the First Hawaiian Bank building at about 400 feet), it is 2100 feet long and 1150 feet wide.  Using  a football field as a measurement, its 5 football fields high, 7 football fields long and almost 4 football fields wide…massive.

Masada was built by King Herod on this huge mountain plateau in the 30 BCE era, took him 7 years…remember, he also built Caesarea in 12 years back in those days.  Imagine the resources, tools and knowledge to build these type of structures…let alone this one in the middle of the desert on a huge hilltop..it is a sight to see.  It faces the Dead Sea and Mount Moab to the East and Jerusalem is north west from here and the only access to it back then was from the north was through 2 valleys..it was not easily reachable.  Masada was used by the Romans as a place to relax and get away.  However in 66 CE, 30 years after Christ died, a group of Jewish rebels, the Sicarii took over the Roman garrison that was stationed there.  The Sicarii, deemed by Josephus, the 1st century Jewish Roman historian was an extremist Jewish splinter group who fled Jerusalem before and after the destruction of the Second Temple (Temple of the Mount) in 70 CE.  In 73 CE, the Romans decided to flex their muscle and still show that they were in charge in this far fetched area some 100 years after it being built.  The battle of Masada was one of many challenges…due to the height and protection of the fortress, the Romans built a 375 foot ramp to drive a battering ramp uphill to break down the entry door..seeing this ramp and how steep it was and how much danger they would be in trying to attack this unreal structure was so breathtaking.  This mountain top was a city within itself. Roman baths, workout area, houses on different levels, different living communities, water wells with a water system that was built into the mountainside that capture rain water (which happened very few times in the year) using the slopes of the mountain and an intricate ducting system that caught the rainfall via mountain side caves built into water sheds..it was nuts to see this.  Anyway, this ramp was built and the Sicarri knew the inevitable would happen and once the Romans were able to siege the door, they decided to take a break and complete the attack the next day.  However, when they entered the compound the next day, all 960 occupants or so, with the exception of 2 women and a few kids, had killed themselves.  The introductory video that we saw showed us that these people would have rather died as free people than live to be slaves for an oppressed government.  So they had each man kill their own families, wives and kids, then each other and the last solider fell on his own sword…they would rather die as free people, than live as slaves..sounded almost William Wallace like (Braveheart reference-FREEDOM!!)…a movie was made on this starting Peter O’toole back in the 70’s but it had to do more with the romance of the Roman Commander and a woman who lived in the fortress.  It was nuts once again to see history played out in front of my eyes, nothing biblical other than the major players during this time, King Herod, the Roman army and the Jewish settlers. The views and historical significance was unreal.  People today visiting the Masada actually are able to hike the hill, we took a cable car up the mountain.  We saw a group of people, kind of young, like 20s, the fastest person made it up in like 30 mins…the last person in their group was about 50mins.  When we went to catch our cable cart up, we met a lady, the only one in her group who wanted to try and walk up and only got to a 1/3 up and came back down..she was not in that good of shape to begin with…but at least she tried..heading down I saw a family with a young boy, maybe 7 or 8 walking up and he did not look to happy.  It’s a trek..way steeper than Koko Head and way hot. However, today we did have winds.  Our guide Hill-El mentioned earlier that temps get up to like 100+ a lot but in the stone structures at night it gets pretty cold.  He also said that at this height the wind that blows off the Dead Sea from the east up to the mountains, like trade winds, occurred a lot to cool this mountaintop quite well.  However today, the wind was coming from the North blowing down from the mountains and I pointed that out to him and he said he has never felt that in all his visits and wasn’t sure why..I knew why, the Kanaka’s brought the wind..lol.  Anyway this was an amazing place to see.  Earlier, we sat down and he shared his own personal struggle with the rebels of Masada killing themselves, actually committing suicide..but our group jointly said there was only 1 suicide the last warrior who killed himself..he disagreed with that and said it was all suicide, and a discussion started but was set aside..the point he was trying to make was that he was able to reconcile what occurred on the mountain because of a writing of a biblical scripture found in the synagogue on this fortress.   Ezekiel 37:11-14 was found written on a parchment paper.  It is the dry bones scripture. To paraphrase, their bones have been dried up (about to die) and they have no hope, and have been cut off. However, the prophet Ezekiel told the people he was talking to (maybe this sect of people who left Jerusalem, not sure, but whoever wrote this had heard this prophecy before or read it and wrote it again here) and the Lord will put His Spirit within them and come to life.

What I got out of it based on what we heard and saw..was that the life God would give these people was in death, and not in slavery.  That in dying they would be free from oppression and strife…not to kill themselves cause there was no hope, like most people do today, but because it was better for them to die as free people then live as slaves.  Jesus died for us so we could have life…that’s a paradox.  We learned in Men’s Fraternity awhile back the paradox principal – die to live..if we do not die to the flesh of our slavery, our own issues our own struggles, than we cannot live freely in Christ.   This was an amazing place to see, but more importantly for me, it was a reminder of what I was reminded of yesterday, I must decrease so He can increase.  I must bury my flesh daily, my selfish desires and put others first.  Thank you Lord for this amazing creation.

We left just at about 11:30 when it was getting really hot, we had been there from about 9 and people where still coming..good luck to them as it was hot.  We headed back to Qumran to have lunch in an a/c dining hall, feasting on chicken schwarma and chicken falafel.  Our typical lunch..lol

Our next stop was the Dead Sea.  The Dead Sea played a huge geographical role in biblical times.  It is in the middle of all that occurred during Jesus time.  Jordan to the East and Israel to the West.  Lebanon and Syria to the North, and Egypt and Sinai to the Southwest.  It is also one of the world’s saltiest body of water at 34% salinity (2011 stat).   Even though called a sea, it is a lake.  It is also 1407 feet below sea level.  The earth’s lowest elevation on land.  At its deepest, the sea floor is about a 1000 feet. It was a place of refuge for King David and a spa for King Herod...lol.  It currently produces and sells huge amount of skin products across the world.  People like us, flock there to try and see what it feels like.  It is a known fact that no species can survive in the water.  The water itself and by itself cannot be used for crops, there are desalination attempts to make this waster usable.  However in recent years, the shoreline is receding quite a bit and is causing the major issues with the topography of the newly created seashore.  Apparently when fresh water (rain) hits the new seashore, it causes the salt laid area to soften and has caused rifts and more destruction of the area around the seashore.  We saw pockets of areas that have sinkholes around the shore.  We also saw a resort spa out there that in the past catered to tourist via spas and products..in the past our guide Hill-El said the people would check in for their treatments and jump in the sea right outside this building.  Now the customers have to take a shuttle down to the shore’s end about a good 500 feet walk…natures erosion in full effect.  This stop was more for fun than for educational, but it turned out to be both.  It was now over a 100 degrees here in the desert and the walk down from our drop off was a good ¼ mile…we were told to bring extra clothes and shampoo and soap.  We were given special instructions on how to enter the water and what to do and not do..the salinity of the water is not dangerous, you won’t die from it but it will sting.  So as you walk in, its like walking into Ala Moana beach..a few little rocks, then sand, then the gooey stuff…then you sit down in the water and sit back..and boom..floating with no effort..the pictures posted show the fun we had…even if you tried to sink yourself you would be unable to…but here is the kicker, us big guys carry a lot of dense weight and we got some big guys on our trip…when trying to stand up, you have to get your feet under you as fast as you can to anchor yourself and then situp all at one time..if not your arms are wailing in the water and splashing the water on your face, in your eyes, in your mouth..and if you go to fast, you can do a face plant into the water..it is pretty funny..seeing some of us trying to do this..now as for the water..wow..it is something unusal..very oily, very salty..a density to it that is hard to explain. I got some on my lip and in my mouth a little bit and uggh..what a horrible taste…it does feel good..almost like a very liquid lotion on your body..but gooey..it was pretty cool. We spent about 30mins in the water, laughing and enjoying ourselves and had to take multiple showers to wash off the salt deposit on our body.  One of our ladies had a crust of white salt on her face when she came out.  This was a fun time for us all.

Our last stop back was Jericho.  This is a Palestinian controlled region of Israel and once again, Hill-El being and Israeli Jew could not enter in with us. And this visit, like our Bethlehem visit was very unsettleing..it was 3rd world like, rundown buildings, buildings partially completed or done but not used…lots of stores and vendors..we noticed we were the only huge tour bus in the place and none of us were comfortable with leaving the bus.  But we were able to stop at the Tree of Zacchaeus, a sycamore tree.  This is where in the bible, Luke 19:1-10, we are told about this chief tax collector, a descendant of Abraham, who was an example of Jesus personal, earthly mission to bring salvation to the lost.  Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem and crowds were gathering and because Zacchaeus was short, he decided to climb this tree to see Jesus.   Jesus saw him and called out his name to come down and visit his house.  The crowd was shocked and bothered by this…why would Jesus a Jew, sit with a tax collector sinner. But that was Jesus…seeking the lost and preaching, teaching and healing  One of our group, Jim did a great job on sharing his devotion, the 5 F’s – faith, family, friends, fitness (physical and mental) and finances..in that order.  And we like Zacchaeus, are sinners saved by the grace of Jesus Christ. Amen..great job Jim!!!

So not getting out of the bus and making sure we spent as little time as possible, we headed up to the Mount of Temptation, where Jesus came out of desert after His 40 day fast as described in Matthew 4.  As historians cannot exactly pinpoint the exact location, this has been the place memorialized by a Catholic church.  There was a camel ride and multiple vendors waiting on a tourist to visit, but as shared earlier, there was an apprehension on exiting the bus due to what we experienced and saw in Bethlehem the other day (also Palestine controlled) and what just occurred the day before.  Rightly or wrongly, and even we could sense it in the way Hatem was driving, pretty quickly and without Hill-El being with us..we felt it better to remain cautious and safe today.  With that said, Hatem sped out of Jericho..our entire time there was less than 30 mins.  But once again, to see with my own eyes 2 significant places of the bible, continues to bring so much context for me.  We headed back to our hotel for some rest before dinner.

One of the questions and things that most of us have been trying to get a handle on, and for all of us, when we travel, you kind of want to get your bearings.  But especially in Israel, where we hear about the West Bank, Gaza, Palestinian controlled/administered, Israel controlled, etc..its hard to understand the whole land issue here.  So Hill-El had some time and for about 30 minutes he went through the whole land issue with us – Israel land 101.  In short, it all started after World War 1, when Britain and France were designated territories to oversee and split up between the 2 countries to govern.  Then it continued on to after World War II where the Jewish people around the world in the European region were getting displaced (refugees) and had no home land.  An accord was agreed to this current land area in between Egypt and Syria that 2 groups of people, Jewish and Arabs would have land rights to.  According to history land talks were held and the Jewish group agreed to the land divide and the Arabs said no to everything.  So the ruling body at that time came up with their own map and in 1949 the official state of Israel was declared with this land mass and in on-going negotiations and wars over the last 60+ years, the Arab community, now called Palestinian (formerly the PLO) were given 3 regions in the land area known as Israel..and all 3 areas are not connected together by anything other than borders and lines.  The Golan Heights area are split and governed by both the Syrian and Israeli governments.  The West Bank area (on the Jordan River West bank, kind of like the middle of the map of Israel and the Gaza strip are controlled by the Palestinian government and the rest is by Israel.  Places like Bethlehem, right outside of Jerusalem is a good example, its in Israel, the state country but considered a Palestinian controlled area…Jericho and much more.  It’s all about the land and who controls it…it’s totally confusing but also understandable..it’s all about the land and the land is the main factor causing this dispute.  So like this land issue, it also exists in communities.  The Temple Mount is considered in Israel land, but the actual Temple Mount is overseen by Palestinian Muslims.  In Bethlehem you have Arab Muslims and Arab Christians..it’s nuts trying to totally understand it but it is a reality.  I am totally now interested in studying this more and understanding it more.  So after this Israel Land course for dummies was done, and so blessed by Hill-El, went up to the room to pass  out and get ready for dinner.  Kind of funny, when I took a shower before dinner, I had a layer of salt, almost invisible to wash off, I could feel it..and I am a bit sunburned and my lips and face fill chapped from that dunk.

We had a great dinner, our last one as a whole group, cause we lose Jim and Ann form North Carolina on Wednesday as they head to Paris for a few days.  Time is winding down and the ohana we have made has been unreal.

My take away from today…goes back to the land issue.  In America, we identify with who we are based on our race…White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, etc…but in Hawaii, where we are a melting pot, we all mixed up people, so we don’t delineate as much..however we kind of do when we do Haole and locals…but in recent years with the influx of more of the Asian people and South Pacific (Koreans, Thailand,Vietnam, Micronesians etc) we are beginning to mirror the mainland USA..just a little bit..but more now than ever before.  However in the Middle East, people identify themselves as a religion not a race..Muslims, Jewish, Christians, Greek Orthodox, Armenian Orthodox, Cathloic, etc..from all different race and colors…and it all goes back to the land…who has it and who controls it.  With land comes power, money, government etc…this I can totally relate to..in Hawaii, it’s all about the land and whose agenda is being advanced..and its not for religious reasons…its who can get the control of the money and the land…this might not be a popular statement but back in the late 90’s there were 2 very vocal and confrontational people in Hawaii, yelling and protesting for lands for the Hawaiians, Sovereign government for the Hawaiians…I mean they were out there, extremist even to the point..not physical but just verbal…for the last 2 decades they have been real quiet…why? 1 got a school built for it, a college facility and gets paid and benefits from it..the other got free land on Homestead and consults for local companies needing Hawaiian issues resolved..they got theirs..they got their money, land and control for themselves, not for the betterment of the people…this is so similar but not as big as what is going on in the Middle East..it’s all about the land.  And it causes, chaos, fear, turmoil, strife, unrest, hurts, pains..all things of the enemy and Satan wins when we are not unified as a race..the human race.  All these religions can agree that God created us..there is no science in it....so if God created all of us than we are important and valuable by Him…but then unlike Jesus, who came to unify all people to the Father, the other religions want us to perform to gain whatever it is that is to be gained.  Christianity, true Christianity is rooted in a relationship with the Father for eternity, not based on what we do or don’t do, but what He did.  It’s not about the land grab, the governmental control or the money..its about the relationship.  We all have more in common than we do different, but then we let the differences dictate what we do and who we are.  Jesus looked upon the crowd with compassion and fed the lost, healed the lost, created a relationship with the Father for the lost…wow!!

Lord, please help us to see Your will and way in our lives, in our communities, in the Middle East, in Israel, in the USA, in Hawaii, around Your world.  Lord, we repent for our actions of greed, selfishness, hurts, etc.  Lord, help us to love You and love others.  Lord have Your way in me, do Your work, help me to see what and who You want me to influence, to love, to forgive, to share Your love.  Lord have Your way in me. Amen!!

It’s about 6:30am Wednesday morning.  Today is our last full day in Israel as we head to the airport tomorrow.  Totally blessed by this all.  Today, we will be visiting the House of Caiaphas, the Upper Room and the Garden of Tomb.  Hopefully we will be able to see the Holocaust Museum…also shopping is on tap..and I am not looking forward to that..lol…

Thank you all for your prayers and love and support.  No new news on the bus bombing this morning but continue to pray for this region.  Pictures of the day attached..sorry still in reverse order..lol.

Love you all and God bless!!

Monday April 18 - a unusual ending to our day

Monday April 18 – day 5 in Israel

22 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 23 “Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, ‘Thus you shall bless the sons of Israel. You shall say to them:  24 The Lord bless you, and keep you;   25 The Lord make His face shine on you, And be gracious to you;
26 The Lord lift up His countenance on you, And give you peace.’ 27 So they shall invoke My name on the sons of Israel, and I then will bless them.”  Numbers 6:22-27

My days are so messed up…we arrived Thursday night, April 14, correct?  So today is our 5th day in Israel but our 4th day of touring…lol…anyway, it’s Monday here in Israel and we have 2 more full days of touring before we jump back on a plane to NY on Thursday morning.

So before I share about the unreal amazing things of today, let me share with you that there was a bus fire/explosion on Herbron Road, about 5 miles from our hotel.  We were at the hotel getting ready to go out to dinner at the Jaffa gate in Jerusalem and all kinds of sirens were going on outside.  The initial reports and subsequent stories on the internet are contradicting its own reporting.  An article in the Haaretz News posted at about 8:20pm Monday Israel time confirms that it was a terrorist attack.  Our plans for tomorrow is to go see Masada and the Dead Sea back where we were at on Saturday.  Will keep you posted on our adventurers tomorrow.  When we were getting ready for dinner at about 5:30pm, we could here sirens of Police officials flying by our hotel, on the main drag.  Our dinner was in the opposite direction so our bus driver Hatem was not to concerned about it.  We met Hill-El at the Jaffa Gate area for dinner and he shared with us what he had known up till that time.  When we got back from dinner is when we saw on the website of the supposed findings.  Please keep Jerusalem, Israel and this entire region in prayer.  This is the reality people live in here everyday.  Unrest, tension, chaos, disunity.  So many different cultures based on religion and rarely any middle ground at all.

Still trying to figure out Google photos..it allows me to upload pics to album, but it won’t allow me to automatically sort out the photos by time taken..it shows it from last one taken to first one taken. I can sort it, but I must do it manually..one by one..that takes way to long..maybe I should take less pics…lol.  Anyway…

Today, was an amazing day, regardless of what just occurred.  It will impact some of our travel, but we are all trusting God for His protection and sovereign nature.  Furthermore, it shows how much I, we, must pray for this area  This region affects our world in general.  Whatever happens here, regardless of what we think ore believe, affects how we live in the USA and Hawaii..we may not see it daily or constantly, but it will affect our lives..its like the pebble dropped in the water and ripple effects.  We can do the same from our side by dropping in our own little pebbles that can affect changer here.  Praying for Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Israel, the middle East and our world.

We made two stops today, but according to my walk-o-meter on my phone, I took about 12,100 steps or about 5.5 miles walking today…after dinner, the total is 16,182 steps (Brandi and I walked to the train station when we came back just to look at some of the restaurants and stores in the area that Hill-El told us to go check out. So today, we walked a total of 7.31 miles.  No wonder my feet is sore and hamstrings and legs all tight.  Lol..

Our first stop today was pretty significant…we were visiting what is called the Old City of Jerusalem.  We were going to walk the Via Dolorosa, “The Way of the Cross.”  This is where we learned in our Christian faith that Jesus walked this trek to His death at Calvary.  There are 12 stations shown by the original Catholic church, we walked thru all of them.  Some of these stations are not in the Bible, but assumed to be there based on other writings or confirmations.  But prior to doing the walk we first visited the Pool of Bethesda, where St. Ann’s church now sits.  St. Ann was the mother of Mary who was the mother of Jesus.  At this Pool, as John 5 states, was where Jesus healed the man who was crippled for 38 years.  Jesus did 3 things during His time on earth:  Preach, Teach and Heal…in no particular order.  At this Pool, He spoke to the man to get into the pool and the man was healed.  The layout of this pool, was pretty cool..many areas still remain today after years of excavation.  Bethesda as shared by Pastor David in his awesome sharing today of John 5, talked about the pool being a place of grace and disgrace..grace in the fact of where people were getting healed by the water and a place of disgrace, cause a lot of people were sick, based on not only their health issues but also by their sin nature as the bible said the people said.  Jesus came to heal..not just physical, but emotional and spiritual.  The Hebrew word for heal, is rapha, to make whole..so it was not just about physical healing, but making a person whole in the Lord.  The devotion and discussion time was amazing.

From here, we walked to the starting point of the final hours of Jesus’s life.  From the Praetorium of the Roman Court where Jesus was condemned to death on the grounds of the Antonia Castle, where a boys school is now located.  To right across the street at the Chapel of Flagellation where Jesus was beaten badly and had a ring of thorns placed on His head.  The chapel has an area inside its walls that had an area on the ground, a artifact found that showed where Roman games were played such as dice.  As we continue on out through twists and turns, vendors, Muslim vendors are aggressively trying to sell us stuff.  Especially in the corridors we walked through and not the roadway vendors.  They were not as aggressive.  The 3rd, 4th and 5th locations we saw was where Jesus fell for the first time with the cross, where Jesus sees His mom Mary and where Simon of Cyrene (modern day Libya) helped Jesus pick up the cross and helped him carry it.   We walked by the place where historians and not the bible say that the woman, Veronica wiped His face, where Jesus falls for the 2nd time and where He consoles the crying women of Jerusalem in the midst of His own paid.  Some of these stations are not part of the Bible, but have been commemorated by chapels or a significant structure. This walk is through roadways and corridors with stairs and pathways heading up to Calvary.  Station 9 is where Jesus falls for the 3rd time and station 10 is where His clothes were stripped and divided.  Station 11 is where He is nailed to the cross and station 12 on Calvary is where He is stood up on the cross to die.  This area of Calvary is now covered by the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.  Today, it is run by 2 churches in the same church, the Catholics and the Orthodox Greeks.  In this area, we climbed up these very steep stairs to a tabernacle and an area where Calvary bedrock is covered and shown.  We had to be reminded by our guide to take off our eyes of what we are seeing with all these new buildings and churches on the grounds that Jesus walked and see the area as Jesus walked through it.  We then walked down to where station 11 was, the area that Jesus body was placed on a long piece of bedrock to be prepared for burial.  We then had hoped to see the tomb of Jesus, but like the other day, when we went to see Jesus birthplace, commercialization has taken over this place. Jesus tomb was now covered by a dome and a structure that was built over this tomb that Joseph of Arimathea had given for Jesus body.  This area was packed..so we chose to go see the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea, which was located no more than 40 feet from Jesus tomb to see what those tombs looked like and where Jesus would have been placed. It was amazing to see how the bodies were initially placed and then the tombs sealed for a certain amount of time until someone could go in and place the bones, free of flesh into a small box (I forgot what the name of those boxes are).  But as we all know, Jesus rose from the dead, so they could not go and get His bones.  We walked by the tomb of Jesus and initially I had wanted to see for my own eyes that He was not in there…but my faith tells me He is not.  It was an amazing thing to see the progression and the real life moments of the way Jesus lived His last hours on this earth. This last area was filled with people of all cultures, all religions all backgrounds….it was weird and a bit frustrating at times to see and feel some of things going on around me..bumping into me, pushing, lack of reverent awe for the history of this place. Many people had brought things like white cloths, beads, bottle of purchased Holy Water and Anointing oils..bag fulls and placed it on the area of Calvary or on the area of where Jesus body was laid on the bedrock…I mean, I understand that we all have different customs and cultures, but to see and feel what I saw disturbed me tremendously…I remember a lesson we learned about the Prodigal Son and his older brother..they both were more concerned about the father’s things (inheritance, blessings, money) than they were about being in relationship with the father….kind of like how we treat God at times.  We desire more of His blessings, His healings, His favor, His things..than just desiring Him..to be with Him…now I am not perfect and this is more about my issues than what was going on around me..but I was more focused on the life of Christ and how and what He did for us was more important than getting to just see and get something out of this area to use later.  I was praying a lot during this 30 min timeframe..trying to connect to God and not just go ballistic on the pushing and shoving.  I actually body blocked a few visitors as they tried to go ahead of our group and interfere with their silent moment at Calvary…I think I took out/blocked out like 3 people..still got some size and movement to do this…I repented after though…lol.  When our group was looking in Joseph’s inner tunnel, I went outside just to pray and meditate on what I was seeing..the tomb where Jesus laid, but never stayed.  He fulfilled His purpose here on earth: birth, live, spread the Good News, die, resurrect and ascend…all to connect people to God and His kingdom…wow….I was here at one of the final acts of His life and earlier in the week, I had been at site where the resurrected Jesus sat with Peter and the disciples…amazing.  The things of the past are so fresh in my mind right now.  This for me, regardless of my flesh being bothered for that short period of time was so insignificant to what I was seeing and feeling…no words could totally explain how I felt at that time.  There has been a many few times that when I am in my own personal reflection that I put my earphones on and  just listen to worship music where I am at.  At this location and earlier at the Pool of Bethesda, I played the song “O Praise the Name” Hillsong’s version and was just blown away by the words and realism of what I was seeing  Thank You Lord for this experience.

We walked approximately 3.25 miles from the Pools of Bethesda, through the Via Dolorosa to Calvary and ended up in the Jewish Quarter by a square that had food places to eat.  Western Food was available, pizza and burgers, but we stuck with the schwarma’s…had a chicken one today and it was huge..like a big burrito.  It was ono.  Our lunches have been at the right time the past few days..hungry and tired after so much action in the morning.

Our next stop was not a planned site in our trip plans, but we had time to do it and it gave huge contextual info for us on things we have seen. We went to the Israel Museum.  It had 2 main exhibits that Hill-El wanted to show us.  It had a model 50-1 scale of the entire Jerusalem during the 2nd temple period.  The time before, during and after Jesus walked this area.  The model was so realistic and so big…we looked at it from the position of where we were yesterday, from the area of Mount Olives and seeing the Temple Mount on Mount Moriah.  The actual temple built was huge compared to the current Dome of the Rock.  We saw the roads and steps that Jesus took in Jerusalem.  We saw the intact South Wall, West Wall area and the entire path of the Via Dolorosa.  Amazing to see it from the various angles and various major structures.  Gave so much contextual visual information for us all.

2nd thing we saw was the artifacts from the Dead Sea Scroll area, Qumran.  Unreal, stuff, original stuff shown in exhibits.  Shears, sandals, a brush, dates – actual dates that were burnt and charred.  It had actual scrolls, the 3 types talked about the other day…biblical, apocryphal and society laws.  The Book of Isaiah is mounted on this circular cylinder in the middle of the exhibit, wrapped around a huge pole.  This is the entire Book of Isaiah with some revisions and missing holes here and there.  The actual parchment paper is stored in a vault so it can remain visible, this is an exact copy replica on paper…unreal.  This area of the exhibit is built in a dome shaped area, similar to the jars the scrolls were held in..and at the top is a white mushroom top similar to the covers that were used to seal the scrolls up..its pretty cool.  The final place we went to, and by this time, I was tired..beat…my feet and legs were sore..but the things we saw were worth it.  Artifacts from all periods of time.  We saw that actual stone seat from Caesarea that we saw a replica of that had Pilates name on it.  We saw this piece of foil that was found in the valley of Hinnom near our hotel that had the scripture, shown above written on and discovered from over 3000+ years ago.  It was pretty amazing!!

We then headed back to the hotel, about a 10 min bus ride..to get some rest. Like last night, since it is Pass Over, our hotel is not preparing dinners.  Like I mentioned above, we headed out to the Armenian Quarter for dinner at an Armenian restaurant.  A big group came in after us..the food was great..very similar to what we have been eating.  Fresh veggies and humus for pupus, saffron rice, kabobs (beef and probably goat), chicken, steamed veggies, lemon juice, a shot of very strong coffee and something like coconut cornbread.  We also had a surprise birthday cake and song for Amy Webster.  Her husband is one smart man..her birthday is not till Wednesday, but there will be no cake with leaven in it come that day..due to the Passover and thus he wanted to have a cake for her to eat that was like a real cake…smart move Tom!!!  The group was heading to a Lights of David show down in the City of David Tower, 4 of us headed back to the hotel with Hill-El.  We walked up to the train station that Hill-El kept telling us about and it was pretty cool..lots of restaurants, young families having dinner, music on the radio. Very nice for a train station. Finally at about 8:30pm approximately 15 hours of being up, we headed back to the room  So that’s it for this day of adventure.

My take away today for me, is this..I need Jesus everyday…not just here in Jerusalem..yes I have been blessed to see and experience these events..but Jesus, God is more than just a moment in time.  Seeking Him, desiring Him, listening to Him, obeying Him, praising Him, worshipping Him, teaching and preaching about Him, healing in His name is a life long journey.  In the mist of chaos, frustration, hurt, suffering, joy..whatever we may be going through, we need Jesus more and more.  He died so we could live in His glory…my prayer today for me, is that I decrease so He can increase in me.  I need to see things and hear things and speak things through His eyes, His ears and His mouth.  I need to see what He sees in those around me.

Lord, thank You for this day. I pray for those that were injured in the bomb explosion.  Lord I pray for peace, Your peace above all understanding to exists in the people of this country, in this region.  Lord these are all Your children, trying to live out beliefs in different ways.  Lord, please reveal Your Triune nature to us all so that we all may call You our Lord and Savior.  Lord have Your way in all of us.  Open our eyes, ears and heart to You.  Lord, please grant peace on this area.  Love You and thank You!
